I stood there looking at the assholes who crashed my party. I wondered if they would talk if we tortured them, but I doubted it.

I considered executing them right here, but then there would probably be hell to pay at city hall. I had to think. Then I heard screams. And then shots rang out.

What the fuck? I glared at the hunters, who now wore smirks on their faces and exchanged knowing looks. Oh shit, that could only be very, very bad.

“No matter what happens, don’t let them move a muscle. I want them right here when I get back,” I said. Then I sprinted around the building.

When I turned the corner, I couldn’t believe my eyes. More hunters had crashed the party. I heard more shots and saw a couple of dragons on the ground.

Rage washed over me. The first hunters must have been a diversion. And I had fallen for it.

I sprinted forward, wishing I had a gun on me, but I’d shift into a dragon if I had to. I decided these assholes were going down, no matter what it took. For now, I kept the dragon down as I ran around the fire and desperately looked for the hunters who had been here fighting my men just a minute ago. Where had they gone?

Then I caught movement out of the corner of my eye. An unmarked white van, the hunters were bugging out. But they weren’t alone. They had Lily and her friend.

“Lily!” I screamed. My dragon roared with anger. And there was nothing I could do as the van squealed out of the parking lot and onto the street. I hadn’t even been close enough to get a look at the license plate.

I wanted to shift, but I couldn’t very well shift into dragon form and then fly down the highway in plain sight following that stupid van.

I’d be seen by way too much of the general public here in the city. Axel’s run had been very short and mostly over our property. And outside the city we had a lot more leeway. But in the current situation I was screwed, and the hunters knew it.

I darted around the building, running the fastest I ever had in my life. But by the time I got to my chopper, the hunters were long gone. The night had gone silent. Just like that I had lost her.
